Best Free Antivirus and Anti-Spyware Software for Windows

If you are a Windows user, you must install an antivirus and anti-spyware software in your system. We all install software, games, themes and many other stuff from various sources such as downloaded from Internet, from CD/DVD, USB drives, etc and if the downloaded file is infected, it can also install a virus or spyware in our system as a bonus.

That's why we need a good antivirus and anti-spyware software for Windows OS. This software protects our system from suspicious items. It continuously monitors our system and warns us whenever it finds a malicious item in our system.
There are many antivirus and anti-spyware software available on Internet to download. Some of them are free and some of them are paid. Obviously paid security software provide more features and control over them in comparison with free software programs.
But there are a few free antivirus and anti-spyware programs which provide almost all features which a paid security software provides.
Today in this topic, we are going to list top 5 free antivirus and anti-spyware software for Windows operating system for your convenience. We have tested many security programs in past and found following 5 programs best of them. If you are not using any antivirus or anti-spyware program in your system, you must install one of the following without wasting time:
1. Microsoft Security Essentials (MSE)
Microsoft Security Essentials (also known as MSE) is one of the best free antivirus and anti-spyware software for Windows. Its an official security program released by Microsoft. Its available absolutely free to download but you'll need genuine Windows to install it.
It can be installed in Windows XP, Vista and Windows 7. Windows 8 already comes with MSE preinstalled. You can install it in both 32-bit and 64-bit operating systems.
2. Avast! Free Antivirus
We put Avast! antivirus on 2nd position. It comes with antivirus, anti-spyware, firewall and many other security components. It can be installed in Windows 2000 professional SP4, Windows XP SP2 or higher, Windows Vista, Windows 7 and Windows 8. Both 32-bit and 64-bit editions are supported.
3. AVG Antivirus Free Edition
AVG antivirus is almost equivalent to avast! antivirus. It also comes with antivirus, anti-spyware, link scanner and many other security features. It can be installed in Windows XP, Vista and Windows 7.
4. Avira Free Antivirus
Avira is also one of the widely used antivirus for Windows OS. It can protect your system from virus, spyware, malware, trojan, rootkits and many other forms of malicious programs. Avira antivirus can be installed in Windows XP, Vista and Windows 7. It supports both 32-bit and 64-bit Windows editions.
5. Panda Cloud Free Antivirus
And last but not least its turn of "Panda free antivirus" which is a very light-weight antivirus software for Windows. Its based on cloud computing concept which makes it one of the most light-weight antivirus programs available for Windows. You need a good speed Internet connection in your system to use it. It can be used in Windows XP, Vista, Windows 7 and Windows 8. As usual both 32-bit and 64-bit editions are supported.
That's all for now. If you are using any other free antivirus or anti-spyware software in your system, feel free to share your feedback in your comment.

NeoSmart announces Windows Recovery Essentials

Important news is coming from NeoSmart Technologies, the company praised for the award-winning boot manager software EasyBCD: the developer will soon release a new system recovery CD for Windows operating systems, rewritten from the ground up due to licensing issues with the official Microsoft products.

Like many companies selling recovery CDs for Windows, NeoSmart was thus far licensing the Windows Pre Installation Environment (WinPE) directly from Microsoft to develop and release its own bootable recovery environments.

But starting from January 2012, NeoSmart reveals, Microsoft stopped renewing the pre-existing licensing agreements with third parties, forcing its partners to search for an alternative solution to develop future bootable CDs without using Redmond’s own WinPE.

NeoSmart says it is now working on its “next generation” repair CDs, a product that is “not just a replacement for the current WinPE-based repair CDs, but rather a whole new software written from the ground up with the express intent of fixing whatever it may be that stops your PC from booting”.

The upcoming (and currently in private beta) Windows Recovery Essentials (or WinRE for short) will be able to repair and fix “common and uncommon problems” preventing the system to boot or work properly, NeoSmart promises, “including those that the Windows installation DVD can’t or won’t fix”.

Flash Player exploit found on Internet Explorer fixed in patch

If you use Flash Player a lot on your Windows PC, specifically with your Internet Explorer web browser, you will definitely want to update to the latest version as soon as possible. Adobe has announced that it has releaseda new security update for Flash Player. While the update has been launched for Windows, Mac, Linux and Android versions, the main target is users of Windows and Internet Explorer.
Adobe states in its update bulletin:
These updates address an object confusion vulnerability (CVE-2012-0779) that could cause the application to crash and potentially allow an attacker to take control of the affected system. There are reports that the vulnerability is being exploited in the wild in active targeted attacks designed to trick the user into clicking on a malicious file delivered in an email message. The exploit targets Flash Player on Internet Explorer for Windows only.
The update should be downloaded and installed if you have Flash Player 11.2.202.233 and earlier on Windows, Mac, and Linux ports, along with versions 11.1.115.7 or earlier on Android 4.x and versions 11.1.111.8 on Android 3.x and 2.x. Ars Technica also suggests that Mac users quickly update to the new version even though the exploit seems to be targeting Windows users at the moment.

Avira fixes antivirus update that crippled many PCs

If you use the Avira antivirus program, you likely got hit with a big problem for a number of hours late on Monday and earlier today. ZDNet reports that the software program downloaded a new update, along with a new antivirus definitions file, that caused the software to falsely detect malware in major PC programs.
The 8.2.10.64 update for Avira, for Windows XP, Windows Vista, and Windows 7 PCs, caused the software to say that malware existed in programs such as Explorer, Internet Explorer, Notepad, the Windows Task Manager and many more. In addition, the faulty update also blocked the use of a number of other Microsoft and third party programs.
This issue apparently lasted for about 12 hours for the many millions of PC users who have the Avira software installed. Earlier today, the company announced via its Facebook page that it has released yet another update to the software that should fix the problem. The message added, "We deeply regret any difficulties that this may have caused you. Thank you for your patience and understanding!"
This update issue only affected users of the paid version of Avira. The free version of the software does not receive the same kinds of updates and thus was not affected.

350 million Windows 7 devices to be shipped this year

Windows 7 has been another successful platform for Microsoft as the rock solid OS won the hearts of many after their tribulations with Vista. Having sold hundreds of millions of copies of the OS, Microsoft is now predicting that 350 million devices will be sold this year running Windows 7, a phenomenal number.
What is driving all of this growth? According to Bloomberg, corporate demand has been a key driver of success and is currently exceeding the company’s estimates. Steve Ballmer said that this will make Windows 7 the “most single popular system” on the market.
While Windows 7 is selling at a tremendous rate, Microsoft is about to launch its next generation of Windows, Windows 8. The upcoming OS is a stark contrast to Microsoft’s traditional offerings and goes as far as to remove the iconic start button.
The OS is not expected to hit retail until sometime this fall, most speculate in October, and it will also bring with it Microsoft’s tablet OS that will finally compete with the iPad and Android tablets.
As we sail off in to the Metro-fied sunrise of Windows 8, Windows 7 will keep the profits flowing until the next platform arises. If this report is any indication, it looks like Microsoft is on track to continue is healthy fiscal track right up to and through the launch of Windows 8.

Microsoft Windows 8 Tablet Compete

There is a lot of talk online about Microsoft’s announcement next Monday. Everything regarding this announcement is to be in secret, but many or speculating that Microsoft is going to announce their own tablet running the Windows 8 operating system.

While Microsoft has attempted to enter the tablet market in the past – even before Apple’s iPad – this will be their first tablet in an era where tablets are very popular. The question is whether a Microsoft Windows 9 tablet can compete in a market dominated by the iPad, or will it just be a blip on the tablet sales radar?

Never Count Out Microsoft

Microsoft is one of those companies that everyone seems to want to hate. Even though most of the world’s personal computers run a version of Windows, it seems most people seem to be frustrated with Microsoft on some level.

Since the iPod was released many years ago, Apple has become the darling of the technology world. It seems that the company can do no wrong, and when a product is released, the product becomes a tremendous success in terms of sales.

Microsoft does well in the software market with sales of its flagship Windows operating system still selling well, and its Office products still remaining the industry standard.

The hardware industry, however, can be a totally different world than the software world.

While many people seem to want to dislike everything Microsoft, one thing that I have learned is that you can never count out Microsoft.
Gaming Console Market

I remember when Microsoft announced they were going to release a gaming console at a time when the console market was dominated by Sony and Nintendo. They were the Apple of console gaming.

In 2001, Microsoft released its game console that they called the XBox. I’m sure many people back then thought that the XBox would just be a passing fad and would eventually disappear.

Over the years the XBox would establish itself not only as a viable gaming console, but also as one the highest selling consoles. The newest XBox, the XBox 360, continues to sell today and remains a popular console.

Microsoft proved with game consoles that it can compete with Sony and Nintendo. The question still remains: can it now compete with Apple?

Competing with Apple

In reality, Microsoft has been in competition with Apple for well over 20 years. Both companies have been competing with their vision of a home computer for decades and still do to this day.

Microsoft has had the dominate operating system for many years, but over the past decade Apple has been gaining ground. Apple has used it’s portable devices – iPod, iPhone, and iPad – to propel it to the top of the technology world. This has led to more people buying their other devices, like their iMacs.

In contrast, Microsoft appears to be taking a different direction – from computers to portable devices. Windows 8 appears to be ushering in a new era for the tech giant – on operating system to run on all devices.

This is definitely an ambitious project to say the least, but while Microsoft has a choke-hold on the home computer market, it must now be the underdog in the tablet world.

There are several things that Microsoft can do to compete against the iPad:
Affordable price. Provide a tablet that is much lower in price to the iPad. The Kindle Fire proved that lower-cost devices can be competitive in the tablet world.
USB/Firewire/eSATA support. Imagine using a tablet that will allow you to connect an external hard drive, keyboard or mouse? While this may seem counter-intuitive, if you are just sitting using the tablet, while not use it with other devices?
Video output connections. Such connections could include HDMI and/or DisplayPort. Having a tablet that can connect to an external monitor or HDTV would be great, especially if you want to watch a move from your tablet on a larger screen.
Built-in card reader. Of course you may want to download your pictures to your camera. It can be used as an external storage device when not at home.
High-resolution screen. With the resolution of the new iPad, it will probably be mandatory for an new Microsoft tablet also include a high-resolution screen.

While many people would have their own ideas on what they would like to see in a tablet, the above list are just some of the things that would make Microsoft’s tablet standout. The Windows 8 operating system would be handle all the above options, so the tablet should be able to include many of them.

Whether Microsoft’s announcement on Monday hasn’t been confirmed, but if it is related to Microsoft releasing its own tablet, it will be interesting to see how well it will compete against the current tablets.

Snap is a new multi-tasking feature for Windows 8 that allows users to run two programs at once. Snap enables you to run two Start Screen apps or one start screen app and one desktop app at the same time. This feature only supports high resolution (1366×768 or above pixel) PCs. However, if you have a low resolution monitor, you can also tryout this feature.

There are two simple methods for you to try Windows 8 Snap feature on unsupported resolutions:
Windows 8 Snap Enabler is a small app that allows you to enable snap feature on Windows 8 Developer Preview with low resolution monitor.

Metro Start Screen Background Image Changer

A developer preview version of Windows 8 is here for a while now. Though, it is released for testing purpose, there are many utilities already available to tweak Windows 8 appearance. Here is another little tool called ‘Windows 8 Start Tweaker’ that lets you simply change the background image ofWindows 8 Metro screen and color of logon screen.

In Windows 8 (Dev Preview), there is no option for users to change the Metro screen background image and start screen (logon screen) green color.

With Windows 8 Start Tweaker, you can make any image file (png/bmp/jpg/gif) as your default Metro Screen background, and any color for your Start screen or logon screen just with a click. Just run the tool, select an image (or color for logon screen) and click 'Apply' button. You can reset the changes to default by clicking the 'Reset' button.

Note: If you want the image fills out the whole screen, you should make a image by yourself. The Height of the image should be doubled with the Height of your Screen Resolution. For example, if your Screen Resolution is 1280x800, you should make a image with Height 1600, and the width is not limited.

Interested users can download Windows 8 Start Tweaker (180KB, Portable) at source here (It works for Windows 8 WDP (build 8102) only).

Windows 8 Task Manager Lets You Remove Unwanted Startup Programs

We have Windows 8 developer preview here for sometimes now and from my experience, I should say it is a fast, secure and user-centric OS. As we know, it brings new look and new features to ourcomputer. For example, the task manger in Windows 8 has a new look and added functionalities.

Now the task manger (press Ctrl + Alt + Del to enable) has two type of interface – one is simple that shows only running apps, which makes you easy to mange (terminate) a running app. Another is more detailed task manager (enable by clicking more details option) that gives comprehensive details (see screenshot above).

A new addition to the Windows 8 task manager is an option to control the start up items. Just click the Startup tab to see the programs running at Windows startup and its impact. Usually, too many items definitely will increase boot time.

From Startup tab, you can easily disable or block unwanted applications automatically launching at Windows startup. Then reboot your PC.

Unable to Change Desktop Background in Windows 7

Sometimes you cannot change your desktop wallpaper in Windows 7. For example, you see a black background even though you change your background picture. Another instance is, when you try to right-click a picture and then select ‘Set as desktop background’, you will get an error message “This image can't be set as wallpaper. An internal error occurred”, etc.

This can be caused by one or more following reasons.

There are third-party applications like Display Manager from Samsung. (Resolution, uninstall)
Background setting in the power options is disabled
The Remove background images option is incorrectly checked (Control Panel\Ease of Access\Ease of Access Center\Make the computer easier to see)
Domain policy disables the background changing
Corrupted TranscodedWallpaper.jpg
You are using Windows 7 Starter or Windows 7 Home Basic; these versions of Windows 7 do not support changing the desktop background picture”If you have such an issue, just read this Microsoft article (KB2504610) to know how to fix it quickly.

Disable or Enable Windows 8 Metro UI

Microsoft Windows 8 has a new, intuitive Start screen called Metro UI. However, some users still likethe old start menu of Windows. Previously we had published an article on enabling Windows 7 like start menu in Windows 8 developer preview, here is a new tool called Win Eight Metro UI Switcher that lets you switch between Metro UI and the Windows 7 styled Start menu in Windows 8 just with a click.

Win Eight Metro UI Switcher is a standalone application (no dependence on .NET framework) that brings Windows 7 like start menu to Windows 8. It can also give back the classic Task Manager to Windows 8 that can show CPU utilization history per processor or core.

To use this tool, download and install it. Click ‘Disable Metro UI’ to disable Windows 8 start screen, and click ‘Enable Metro UI’ to bring back Windows 8 start screen. For the changes made to take effect, you have to restart or log off your system after tweaking.

Note: when the Metro UI is disabled, Windows Explorer has the revamped Ribbon interface turned off.

Win Eight Metro UI Switcher can be downloaded free at software developer website.

Unlock a BitLocker Encrypted Flash Drive

Protecting the data on your flash drive using BitLocker drive encryption is a smart move to ensure that your personal information is not available to anyone who gets their hands on your drive. While it does take a while to encrypt the data, after the initial setup, you will have no trouble using your encrypted drive. By entering the password you configured, you can unlock it for regular use in a matter of seconds. When using your drive on a Windows 7 machine, you will have full access to view, copy and edit your data. You can also use your drive on a Windows Vista or Windows XP machine, though you will not be able to save alterations to the flash drive. Read on to learn everything you’ll need to know to work with your encrypted drive.

Unlock Your Encrypted Drive in Windows 7

Insert your encrypted flash drive into a USB port on your computer. Windows will automatically recognize the encrypted drive and launch a BitLocker window.

Enter your password in the field provided. Click "Show password characters as I type them," to verify that you have typed your password correctly.

Select "Automatically unlock on this computer from now on," if on your own computer. This will allow you to skip this step and access your data automatically when you insert your drive. Do not select this option on a shared or public computer.

Click Unlock when you’ve entered your password and made your selections. If your password is entered incorrectly, you’ll receive an error.

Otherwise, an AutoPlay window will launch allowing you access to your drive. Click "Open folder to view files," to view your data in Windows Explorer.

If AutoPlay is not enabled, simply open Windows Explorer and open the contents of the flash drive.

Remember to safely remove your flash drive when you are finished working with it.
Unlock Your Encrypted Drive in Windows Vista or Windows XP

Insert your encrypted flash drive into a USB port on a Windows Vista or Windows XP computer. Windows will recognize the device and let you open and browse its content. Open the contents of the flash drive and double-click "BitLocker To Go."

Clicking this item will launch the BitLocker To Go Reader window, which is very similar to the window you will see on a Windows 7 computer. You are asked to type your password.

Enter your password in the field provided. Click "Show password characters" to check for errors.

Click Unlock to open the BitLocker To Go Readerwhich provides access to your files.

You can copy files from your drive and open them on the computer. You will not, however, be able to save edits or files to the flash drive. Attempting to do so will result in an error.

Now that your drive is protected and you know how to use it, you’re data will be safe and secure. For as long as you maintain your password, unlocking and working with the device is extremely simple to do. Make sure to remember your password though, or BitLocker will keep you from your data as surely as it would anyone else. If you should find yourself unable to unlock your drive, you’ll need to use your Recovery Key to get in. Check out the next article in the series, to learn this process.
Conclusion

As you can see, working with an encrypted flash drive is a simple matter. Though you’ll have to sacrifice a few seconds before each use to enter your password, it is a small price to pay for data security. If I’ve missed anything, or you have any questions about the procedure described above, please feel free to leave a comment.

Find Files Saved Recently in Windows

A common problem that many people have been making into while saving a file is ignoring the file saving location. They just click ‘Save’ option or use CTRL + S keys to save a file without bothering to see where the actual file is being saved. As a result, many people, especially new computer users, find it hard to locate the file they just saved. Here is a quick way to find the files that were saved recently in Windows.

In Windows, click ‘Start’ and type ‘date:today’ (without quoting) and click Enter button. A window opens and displays all the files created or updated today.

Similarly, you can type ‘date:yesterday’ to find files saved yesterday, or date:monday to find files created on Monday or date:week to find files created during the week.

Hope you will enjoy this simple tip.
